I’ve been doing a little bit of reading through the Gospel of John, so many beautiful truths and promises. All through this gospel, Jesus is explaining to his disciples who He is. I love all the I am verses.
I am the Good Shepherd.
I am the bread of life.
I am the light of the world.
I am the resurrection and life.
I am the vine.
I also came across an I have verse that stood out to me.
I have overcome the world.
I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have [perfect] peace and confidence. In the world you have tribulation and trials and distress and frustration; but be of good cheer [take courage; be confident, certain, undaunted]! For I have overcome the world. [I have deprived it of power to harm you and have conquered it for you.] John 16:33 AMP
I love how the Amplified translation breaks it down… I have deprived the world of the power to harm you and have conquered it for you. Whatever trial or struggle we might be experiencing today has already been defeated. This is why I think that, even in the midst of trials, we can experience rest. Ultimately, the battles we face have already been fought and won. That thought fills me with so much comfort. Jesus said…I have conquered all of it for you! When life gets rough, remember, nothing alters this truth. No matter what difficulties we might face in this life, we can persevere because we know that nothing can undo what Christ has already done for us.
So, what do you think? With God on our side like this, how can we lose? If God didn’t hesitate to put everything on the line for us, embracing our condition and exposing himself to the worst by sending his own Son, is there anything else he wouldn’t gladly and freely do for us? And who would dare tangle with God by messing with one of God’s chosen? Who would dare even to point a finger? The One who died for us—who was raised to life for us!—is in the presence of God at this very moment sticking up for us. Do you think anyone is going to be able to drive a wedge between us and Christ’s love for us? There is no way! Not trouble, not hard times, not hatred, not hunger, not homelessness, not bullying threats, not backstabbing, not even the worst sins listed in Scripture: Roman 8:31-38 MSG
