Running With Roosters

A rooster moved into my neighborhood a couple months ago.

I hear him when I go running. Every time I hear it, I can’t help but think of the trip I took last November to the Dominican Republic (DR). I had the opportunity to go on a mission’s trip with a group of people from my church. Our church helps to sponsor a school in the DR. And, for the past few years we have gone down there to help serve the school and the Dominican people. Last year was my first time going. The guesthouse where I stayed during the trip is where I heard the roosters. I was for warned to bring earplugs because apparently DR roosters don’t know the difference between 1:00am and 6:00am…or any of the hours in between. It was a pretty amazing trip and I even came to appreciate the sound of the roosters.

I went running this morning and as I left my driveway, I decided to start a mental gratitude list. Ever done one of those? Sometimes, I just like to start thanking God for things- stream of conscience, no edit gratitude. It doesn’t matter how small or how big, I just thank Him.

Thank you God for the legs to run with, eyes to see, the smell of honeysuckle, the rooster crowing, the nose to smell, my brain to think these thoughts, my new running clothes, the somewhat still cool morning, the rooster crowing, the blue skies, the birds flying over head, the names of the streets I get to run on Sunset Circle, Tranquility Lane and Holiday Island (what great names!), the rooster crowing….

Sometimes, I like to think that God placed him here especially for me. I hear it and it puts a smile on my face. I also like to think God was being very thoughtful when he placed him just far enough away so that I don’t get the pleasure of waking up to the sound, only the pleasure of running to the sound. God must already know I am thankful enough for the geese that tend to wake me up in the mornings!
