I woke up to rain this morning. Sometimes I love rainy summer mornings. It all depends on my mood and what is on my To-Do List.

I love how the clouds cover the sun, keeping the sky darker than usual. I love hearing the morning dove singing in the distance. I love how the rain sounds falling off the side of the house and onto the deck. I love watching how the sprinkles gently hit the water in the canal.

Today…I love rainy mornings.

Soothing Sounds

One of my favorite memories as a child is the smell and sound of the Arizona desert after a thunderstorm. Typically, the desert will only get about 5 inches of rain every year. This is so different from where I live now in North Carolina, which averages between 40-50 inches of rain annually. July and August is the rainy season in Arizona, and is often referred to as the monsoon season. These amazing thunderstorms would roll in late in the afternoon, last for thirty minutes or so and then roll out. The rain always left behind a very unique scent that only the desert seems to have. Not only did I love the smell that lingered in the air after these brief storms but I also enjoyed listening to the dove I would often hear singing in the distance after the storm was gone. There is just something so soothing about this sound.

This morning, shortly after the sun came up, I sat and drank my coffee and listened to this peaceful familiar song drift in through my open window. I closed my eyes, breathed in deeply and for a moment, I could smell the desert.
