Remember show-and-tell? My son is finishing up his first year of school. His kindergarten class has show-and-tell time every Friday.Sean will usually pick a toy to take with him and tell the rest of his class why he likes it so much. Once he took his stuffed brachiosaurus named Bob. This morning before school, the subject of show-and-tell came up and my son mentioned that in 1st grade they wouldn’t be doing show-and-tell any more. Then he went on to say… “I won’t have show-and-tell again for the rest of my life.”
His statement kind of made me sad. Show-and-tell is fun. When we really like something, we love sharing whatever that “something” is with other people in our life. Part of us, really hopes they will catch the joy too and perhaps they might experience the same sense of satisfaction that we get from it.
When I read the Bible, I love when I come across show-and-tell verses. Jesus loved show-and-tell. His whole time on earth was an illustration of show-and-tell. He showed people how much he loved them by his actions and he was constantly telling them too. Philippians 2 reminds us that our “attitude should be the same as Christ.” We are to love God with all our heart, with all our soul, and will all our mind and we are to love each other. The way we can do this is through our actions and our words….show-and-tell.
Christ-followers are called to be show-and-tellers. I have never liked the word witnessing and for a long time avoided sharing my faith with others because that word made it sound so scary and unnatural. But I don’t believe God ever intended for it to be so hard. We are simply to show others and tell others what Christ means to us…where I was before He was in my life and where I am now.
I read a quote recently by John Ortberg– “The main measure of your devotion to God is not your devotional life. It is simply your life.”
Here are a some nice “tell” verses that I wanted to share:
But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect 1 Peter 3:15
I will shout for joy and sing your praises,
For you have ransomed me.
I will tell about your righteous deeds
all day long Psalm 71: 23-24
I’ll tell the world how great and good you are,
I’ll shout Hallelujah all day, every day. Psalm 35: 28
I didn’t die. I lived!
And now I’m telling the world what God did. Psalm 118:17
Your love, God, is my song, and I’ll sing it! I’m forever telling everyone how faithful you are. I’ll never quit telling the story of your love— Psalm 89: 1-2
