Delighting in the Famous One

This is what the LORD says:

“Let not the wise boast of their wisdom
or the strong boast of their strength
or the rich boast of their riches,
but let those who boast, boast about this:
that they understand and know me,
that I am the LORD, who exercises kindness,
justice and righteousness on earth,
for in these I delight,”
declares the LORD.

Jeremiah 9: 23-24

I once worked in the same office with man who, a few years ago, Hollywood decided  to make a movie out of his life.  I remember relaxing in bed one night, channel flipping, and a movie trailer being advertised caught my attention.  I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.  I knew this man.  I had even been to his house for an office Christmas party years earlier.  I remember getting so excited over what I was viewing that I shook my sleeping husband to tell him the news.  Roger, Roger…I used to work with that guy!  I know that man!

When I read the above verses in Jeremiah, I thought about the idea of being able to boast about knowing someone famous.   And I was reminded that God desires us to have this same sort of enthusiasm for Him.

When we spend time with Him and get to know and understand Him then we can boast that we know that Man!

but let those who boast, boast about this:
that they understand and know me

I love that these verses reveal that the delight we receive from knowing Him goes both ways.  We delight in Him and He delights in us.

So wake someone up today and tell them about the famous One you know!

Yes! I really like this post. So glad I clicked on your link and got to read it. I find it astounding what can emerge from a writer’s heart in five. minutes. flat. Truly beautiful. And beautifully true.

I love it, we “know that Man!” You’re so right we have reason to be excited. My breath always catches and I scratch my head when I think that he delights in me! What a love story! Great thoughts Eileen.

You know what’s awesome about this…that he is not understandble yet…understandable….that he is unknowable…and knowable…

He reveals himself. that’s the miracle…

This always amazes me when I take the time to ponder on it: “I love that these verses reveal that the delight we receive from knowing Him goes both ways. We delight in Him and He delights in us.” That He would delight in us, in me!

And when we *really* delight in Him, the natural response is praise. Great post, Eileen!

I love the way you describe seeing your work colleague on TV – great way to capture the emotion of delight. We certainly have no end to delight in as we know Jesus, I feel ashamed that my delight is not greater.

Hi Eileen – lovely post. What a great thing to do, boast in Christ. Boast about Him. He is the all in all, the only one worthy of boasting about.
    God bless
