Firm Foundations Credit:  Dreamstime

Today my husband and I meet with a building contractor who is going to inspect the house we are in the process of buying. There is a portion of siding near one corner of the house that has been damaged by water.  We just want peace of mind that the damage isn’t evidence of a bigger, more expensive fix that we simply can’t see with our untrained eyes.

So, it really comes as no surprise to me that today’s Scripture reading would be a reminder to me that Christ is our cornerstone. He is the firm foundation we build on.

“then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. Jesus is“ ‘the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone.’ Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” Acts 4:10-12

I think I’ve picked out the theme and lesson of today’s story and I’m only on my first cup of coffee!  (Okay, it WAS an extra-large cup of coffee…but still.)

Cornerstones and foundations

I took some time this morning to look at a few more verses containing the concept of Christ being the cornerstone and foundation in our lives. I love this one:

“Therefore, this is what the Sovereign Lord says: “Look! I am placing a foundation stone in Jerusalem, a firm and tested stone. It is a precious cornerstone that is safe to build on. Whoever believes need never be shaken.” Isaiah 28:16

We have decisions to make and questions we need to ask about our potential house today.  I want us to make wise and informed decisions as we move forward.  I want us living on a firm and solid foundation. We don’t want to be surprised in five years by a problem we could have been made aware of today.

Cornerstones and foundations

Both these words fill me with a sense of peace and hope. I find the concept of Christ being our ultimate cornerstone comforting.  As we continue to walk through the unknown with this whole house search, I want us to hold onto that Truth.

I am reminded of the lyrics, “on Christ the solid rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand.” He laid Himself down years ago for us and if we choose to build on that knowledge nothing needs to catch us off guard. He is our support when life gets shaky or scary.

Today, I want to keep my eyes and my feet on this firm foundation.
