A couple of days ago, I was channel surfing and happened to come across the newest version of Les Miserables. I sat and watched about five minutes of it. I saw it when it came out in the theater last year and I’ve seen the show live a couple of times in my life. I love the powerful message and the music.
This morning I read the following verses in Colossians 1.
“This includes you who were once far away from God. You were his enemies, separated from him by your evil thoughts and actions. Yet now he has reconciled you to himself through the death of Christ in his physical body. As a result, he has brought you into his own presence, and you are holy and blameless as you stand before him without a single fault. But you must continue to believe this truth and stand firmly in it. Don’t drift away from the assurance you received when you heard the Good News.” Colossians 1:21-23
The scene I happened to catch again in the movie was the one where Jean Valjean was stealing the silver from the priest. He was promptly captured by the authorities. They brought him back and informed the priest of all the items they had found in his possession.
I always tear up at this scene. The priest doesn’t condemn, instead, he tells the authorities that he gave the silver to Jean Valjean. And then, if that wasn’t radical enough grace, he tells him…but you forgot the candlesticks. Those are yours too. I thought about this scene again as I read the above verses this morning.
On any given day, even our worst days, Christ stands ready to pardon us and to wipe away the wrong. And if that isn’t radical enough grace, He goes one step further. He calls us His sons and daughters, invites us into His presence, and throws us a party!
It just so happens to be my birthday today. I am thankful for this perfectly timed reminder.
I love my candlesticks, Lord. They were just what I wanted! 🙂
