“Uzziah sought God during the days of Zechariah, who taught him to fear God. And as long as the king sought guidance from the LORD, God gave him success…But when he had become powerful, he also became proud, which led to his downfall.”
2 Chronicles 26:5,16
It still amazes me sometimes the verses the Lord will use to touch my heart. Here’s my thought as I wrote this post: Really, Lord? 2 Chronicles 26? I’m supposed to write about 2 Chronicles 26?
As I read these passages of Scripture the other day I was reminded of how crucial it is for us to be seeking guidance and direction from the Lord all the time. The wisdom and the direction we receive from Him is beautiful. Quite often, the Lord doesn’t even give us “success” the way we have a tendency to define success and yet we discover a beauty, His beauty, despite our circumstances. He takes our definition of success and turns it on its head! He changes our perspective. And, it all begins in the heart.
These passages in Scripture also reminded me that there are consequences when our hearts wander off and become too proud to listen to His direction. Uzziah’s downfall (if you read the entire chapter) occurs when he chooses to enter the temple and burn incense, a job he was not called to do. His actions reflect arrogance and a sense of entitlement. Pride shifts Uzziah’s heart and his life takes a painful and sad turn.
Today, I want to remember where I belong. I don’t want to try to be someone I am not designed to be. I want to remember who I am in relation to my Creator. I want to remember why I worship Him and why I need to listen to Him.
My desire is to come into His beautiful presence filled with humble gratitude.
Would you join me there today?
