Then Jesus cried out, “Whoever believes in me does not believe in me only, but in the one who sent me. The one who looks at me is seeing the one who sent me. I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.” John 12:44-46
After reading these passages in John in this morning, this familiar acronym came to mind.
I think the first time I heard it I was in a 12-step meeting. The phrase was “Keep it Simple” but folks would add the “stupid” because it fit nicely there at the end. Apparently, the phrase was first coined by Kelly Johnson, an engineer who designed aircrafts and spy planes, and KISS was a design principle made popular by the US Navy back the 1960s. But, the phrase is pretty good life advice too.
This morning I was thinking about how many of us are guilty of making things more complicated than they are intended to be. We over analyze everything. We spend so much time trying to figure things out that we miss the answer that is right there…staring us in the face.
I remember years ago when a good friend of mine offered me some brilliant advice about my tendency to drink too much. “Well, just stop drinking.” At the time, her comment frustrated the heck out of me. (She just didn’t get it!) Yet, in hindsight, when you strip away everything else, her advice is spot on. “Just stop drinking.” It’s THAT easy AND it’s THAT hard.
When I read the verses above, particularly this one “The one who looks at me is seeing the one who sent me,” I had the same exact thought cross my mind.
Lord, it’s that hard and it’s that easy.
We ask questions that seem to have no answers. We have doubts because, so often, we can’t hold the proof in our hands yet in this passage Jesus tells us what the answer is. It’s Him. You want answers…then look at Me! Stop searching for the answers apart from Me. When you are standing in the dark, I will be your light.
Lord, help us to keep it simple today. You are not asking us to have every detail of this life completely figured out. At the end of the day, there is no “how smart are you test” that You are going to ask us to take. In fact, the only question we will have to answer is. “Did you look at Me?”
