On Writing


I started this blog ten months ago. It’s been my first experience with blogging. Ten months ago I actually had to Google “How to start a blog” because I was clueless. I really had no idea what I was planning on writing about- I just knew that I wanted to write more.

As I type today’s entry, I am on a family vacation in Charleston, SC. I found myself thinking on the 7 hour drive down here…Boy, I sure hope I have time to write while I am down there.

I have been reading On Writing, by Stephen King. Prior to this, I had never read anything by Stephen King. A friend recommended the book as a good tool to help improve my writing. I had no idea what to expect when the book came in the mail. I only knew that Stephen King wrote horror type books. My initial thought…maybe it will scare me into writing better.

I am half-way through the book. I never knew Stephen King was so funny! I am thoroughly enjoying the book, both the humor and the advice he has been giving on writing. I am now afraid of adverbs. If you want to know why…read the book!

Here is a quote from the first few pages. I keep going back to it and reading it again. I love it.

There is no Idea Dump, no Story Central, no Island of the Buried Bestsellers; good story ideas seem to come quite literally from nowhere, sailing at you right out of the empty sky: two previously unrelated ideas come together and make something new under the sun. Your job isn’t to find these ideas but to recognize them when they show up.”
