Savoring First

“First” things have been on my mind lately.  Recently, we’ve experienced a couple of first of the season activities.

First dip in an outdoor pool.

First highly anticipated snow cone.  (We’ve been dreaming about it for weeks now.)

I love the seasonal firsts that happen throughout the year.

First snowfall (although the snow skipped us completely this year…boo).
First plugging in of the Christmas tree lights.
First cutting of the grass in the Spring.
First swim in the ocean.

I also love the firsts that have taken place while raising my son.

First…

bath
crawl

haircut

words… Sean’s first word(s) were “excuse me”.  I like to tell him that, even back then, he was a very polite young man…;)

trip to zoo

cake (Note to first-time parents)  You might not want to offer chocolate cake as the first cake.  I didn’t know it then but my son’s eyes were trying to tell me.  “Mom, you don’t know this because I can’t talk quite yet…but I hate chocolate.”

day of kindergarten

unassisted bike ride

And, that first time as an infant when he stretched his little arms out and reached for me with his tiny hands… my momma heart split completely open.

Who knew that joy could hurt so good?

Would love to hear about some of your favorite firsts!  Share in the comments section.

First time I held my grandson. I could not get away after he was born but my wife and oldest daughter did. i was to be in KY the day Janna came home with Braden and told her so. She didn’t know I cancelled my trip to KY and surprised her after she walked through the door. (I was waiting in the car for her where she could not see me). But holding him…wow!

Oh, that’s a great first , Bill! You know, I almost put a picture up of my dad holding my son for the first time. Nothing like watching grandma and grandpa snuggle with their grandchild for the very first time!

I love this picture story of growing up. Watching a baby become a boy. Soon he will be a man.

My favorite first right now is one that hasn’t happened. The first time I hold my adopted children. I can already imagine it as if it has already happened.

Love your post and pictures of firsts! My third child turned eleven yesterday so I have been thinking about such things this weekend. The first time each child was placed in my arms. First times walking through the front door of our home with each new child. First words, first steps, first ball games, all of it. Oh I am getting teary eyed now! They grow up so fast! Such a bitter sweet thing.

But I am also thinking about firsts with Jesus. First time I truly felt His presence. First time I felt His nudge telling me to blog. So many beautiful moments.

Love this, Eileen. The firsts continue. First date. First prom dress. First kiss. (Of course, I wasn’t there for that one, but I was so happy that my daughter wanted to tell me.)

    Oooh, what lovely firsts!

A few favorite firsts that come to mind: The first time my husband asked me on a date (his heart was pounding). 🙂 The first time I said each of my kids’ names out loud when they were born. The first time my son signed “momma.” The first time my son saw my daughter (so sweet).

I love those seasonal firsts too, like snow, Christmas, getting out the flannel sheets, etc.

    Fun post!

What’s funny about this is I was just telling my husband the other night that I had found myself falling into a lot of firsts recently. At 38, while there may be many yearly firsts (first trip to the pool, first snowfall), sometimes its hard to find actual, completely new firsts. Here are a few of my recent ones:

    1. I ran for the first time WITH my husband. For the past 4 years he has been a sideline or waiting at home supporter.

    2. I ran on an unpaved trail. I was a street runner for years.

    3. The trail run led to my first encounter with a snake…in real life…right under my feet. From this I learned white girls CAN jump and I scream like a girl.

    4. Last week I tried collard greens and thought they were awesome.

Great firsts, Krista! You know, I have lived in collard green country for over 10 years and have yet to try them. I will need too!
