“Many Samaritans from the village believed in Jesus because the woman had said, “He told me everything I ever did!” When they came out to see him, they begged him to stay in their village. So he stayed for two days, long enough for many more to hear his message and believe. Then they said to the woman, “Now we believe, not just because of what you told us, but because we have heard him ourselves. Now we know that he is indeed the Savior of the world.”
John 4: 39-42
These verses follow the famous account of Jesus talking to the Samaritan woman at the well. They reminded me that when we share with people about who Christ is, people will have different reactions. Some will immediately believe. Others will ask for more proof.
We can joyfully tell them what He did for us and in us but until that person experiences it for themselves, a part of them wont fully believe. One thing that stands out to me in these verses is how the people who believed the Samaritan woman reacted to the information she shared. They came back to the well and begged Jesus to stay with them a little longer.
I love that. It reminds me of the story in scripture of the dad who cried out “I do believe; help me overcome my unbelief!”(Mark 9:24) The best way for us to overcome our unbelief is to ask Jesus, to beg Jesus, to stick around a little longer and prove it to us, not in a mocking condescending way but in a humble “I am desperate to understand” way.
Do you struggle with trusting Him? Do you doubt He is who He says He is? Let me encourage you to look beyond the doubt and be willing to ask Him to stick around for a while. Get to know Him. Spend time drinking from His well.
