Last night my son and I watched one of the many Charlie Brown specials that have been on this holiday week. One of Charlie Brown’s famous quotes made me laugh, “I have developed a new perspective…I only dread one day at a time.” Poor Charlie Brown, his life seemed to be one long season of challenges.
Have you ever found yourself living his perspective? During challenging seasons in my own life, I developed this perspective, “life is really hard right now and I don’t know how much more I can take…but I can handle anything one day a time. Tomorrow is a new day.” There have even been seasons in my life when I had to break the day I was living down into hours and the hours into minutes. This was the season when I was introduced to Reinhold Neibuhr’s Serenity Prayer.
courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace;
Taking, as He did, this sinful world as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life and supremely happy with Him
Forever in the next. Amen.
What a beautiful prayer to recite when your world is shaking or when you are in the midst of challenges that seem never-ending and way beyond your control. So much of what I need to know in order to live life to its fullest is wrapped like a gift into this little prayer. I just have to choose to unwrap it everyday. As this busy holiday season comes into full swing…remember to unwrap His gifts everyday.
