My Advent Confession

Confession:  I’m doing Margaret Feinberg’s Unwrapping Advent devotional and I just unwrapped tomorrow’s gift today.

Is there some sort of penalty for doing that?  I get the impression Margaret is pretty forgiving, so I’m hoping she goes easy on me. 😉

Well, either way, I’m glad I did peel the paper off of Friday’s gift, because tucked away under the wrapping were words I needed to hear today.  I guess I just find it amusing that I’m doing a study about waiting and hoping and I can’t resist the urge to read Friday’s devotional on Thursday.   And then, the verse that I needed to read makes this struggle to be content in the waiting and the lesson I learned today even more amusing!

We’re in no hurry, God. We’re content to linger
in the path sign-posted with your decisions.
Who you are and what you’ve done
    are all we’ll ever want.
Isa 26:8 Message

Okay, Lord, I get it! 1.  You have a great sense of humor.  2. Please keep working on me, I’m definitely still a work in progress.

There are gifts along this path of life and even though I’m often tempted to run ahead of You and shake all the boxes You sometimes call me to wait and be content with the gifts sitting right here in front of me.

God has an incredible track record of perfect timing in my life.  I know that.  There are countless pieces of evidence of this in my life today!

Today, I want to remember that.

I was also reminded this morning that even when we make the mistake of running ahead, God finds a way to work it back into His plan.  So, even when we choose to open Friday’s gift on Thursday, He uses our choices to teach us, to grow us and to remind us of our need for Him.  I love that, Lord.  Nothing is wasted.

Oh Eileen– this made me smile ear to ear. The irony, the joy, the hilarity, and the overflowing GRACE. LOVE! Thrilled you’re along for this journey. Keep sharing links to your posts– always love reading them. Huge hug, friend.

I’m enjoying the ADVENTure, Margaret. I’ve never really celebrated Advent before…at least not consciously. 🙂 I’m enjoying your devotional! Thanks for the comment. I’m glad it made you smile!

Okay confession time. Sometimes when reading a book I don’t finish a sentence when I see something in the margin highlighted. My eyes look ahead. Does that mean I am messed up or ADD-like or just…aaahh enraptured by what is coming. You’re forgiven for opening the gift early Eileen. I suspect you were meant to hear it today and not tomorrow. 🙂

Eileen, Great advent thoughts. Thank you for sharing. I think it’s a great reminder of how excited we should be as we think about advent – we should be so excited that we can’t help put open the next gift, the next door on the advent calendar, the next page of the story!
