“Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your instruction.” Psalm 119:18
90% of the time I sit down with my laptop in the morning with no idea what words or stories will end up on the page. I love that, when it comes to writing, I am content with not knowing. It’s weird how a recovering control freak (me) can love this creative process. Yet, I do. I look forward to it everyday. It’s kind of like a morning workout for my heart. The mystery of seeing what comes out and what is produced simply by showing up fascinates me. It’s a journey I have fallen in love with over the last 5 years.
As I wrote the words above, the image of a dad standing in front of his young daughter came to mind. The young girl is grinning wide, her eyes are sparking, and she’s jumping up and down with anticipation. The dad has his hand behind his back and is about to reveal a big surprise, a gift especially for his daughter.
Sometimes, that’s what showing up to write feels like to me. Sometimes I feel like God is standing there waiting to give me a gift and my hands start dancing across my laptop keyboard in anticipation. I can’t wait to see what gift is hidden behind His back today!
Writing teaches and grows me in the most amazing ways. I don’t ever want to stop showing up and learning new things about myself, about the people around me, about my world, and about my Lord.
This morning I realized again that this is how I desire to live my entire life too. I want to keep showing up in eager anticipation. I want to keep receiving the gifts that my Father has prepared just for me. I’m beginning to understand that what the gift is really is none of my business. My job is to simply trust that it’s there.
Lord, help us to stand before you today…expectantly. You desire to love on each of us in the most incredible (and often unique) ways. Give us hearts wiling to receive and eyes willing to see!
