The Practice is Over

“So I run with purpose in every step. I am not just shadowboxing.” 1 Corinthians 9:26

I love the word the New Living Translation uses in this verse, shadowboxing.

It reminded me of the familiar quote “life is not a dress rehearsal”. Each movement needs to count for something. Each decision we make should move us closer to our goal. Spending our time throwing imaginary practice punches might make us physically stronger but if you don’t ever make the choice to step into the ring and use your skills then what’s the point?

My husband shared a great quote with me yesterday:

Many people die with their music still in them.
Why is this so? Too often it is because they are always getting ready to live.
Before they know it, time runs out.
~Oliver Wendell Homes

I don’t want to be guilty of always getting ready to live but not really living.  But in order for this to be true, I need to be intentional with the steps I take today.

You don’t train for a marathon and then stay home on race day. No, you show up and you run your race.

I haven’t mentioned my One Word for this year in a while. It’s forward. Today is a reminder for me and for you if you need it…to keep moving forward. Don’t get hung up on the distractions, don’t let things you can’t control slow you down. Don’t make excuses. It’s time to stop dancing around in place.  It’s time to stop moving aimlessly through life.  It’s time to get in the race and run.

Keep your eyes straight ahead; ignore all sideshow distractions. Watch your step, and the road will stretch out smooth before you. Proverbs 4:25-26 Message

That is a great quote Eileen. Your “shadow boxing” imagery made me think of a championship MMA fight I watched about 18 months ago. One fighter was very elusive and efficient throwing few punches. He won a decision and the title but lost the crowd of fans. It looked as if he was getting ready to fight the whole time and never really did. He didn’t engage.
