When our plane landed in Atlanta after the first leg of our trip out to Arizona last week, this standard announcement came over the intercom as we taxied to the gate.
Please remain seated with your seat belt fastened until the plane comes to a complete stop at the gate and the Captain has turned off the fasten seat belt sign .
As our plane made its way to the gate, here is the conversation I had with my son.
“Mom, can I take off my seat belt?”
“Not yet, we haven’t reached the gate.”
“But I can hear everyone else taking their seat belts off…so why can’t I?”
“We don’t take our seat belt off because the plane is still moving and the pilot has not told us to do so yet.”
I know that many of us are probably guilty of doing the same thing. Every time I fly I can hear the sound of unlatching seat belts rippling throughout the cabin. We are so eager to go on to the next step that we don’t wait for instructions to do so.
I made my son wait. I want him to learn the value of listening to instruction. Instructions that can only come from the pilot. The pilot sees the rode ahead of us. The pilot knows when it’s safe for us to move.
“Hold on to instruction, do not let it go; guard it well, for it is your life. (Proverbs 4:13)
Listen to my instruction and be wise; do not disregard it. (Proverbs 8:33)
Choose my instruction instead of silver, knowledge rather than choice gold, (Proverbs 8:10)
Stop listening to instruction, my son, and you will stray from the words of knowledge. (Proverbs 19: 27)
Scripture is our instruction manual for life. It is filled with words from our Pilot. If we choose to listen carefully to these instructions instead of leaping ahead, He promises to make our paths and our journeys straight.
don’t try to figure out everything on your own.
Listen for God’s voice in everything you do, everywhere you go;
he’s the one who will keep you on track.
(Proverbs 3:5 Message)
