The most important question

I once read that the most important question we can ask ourselves when our eyes first open in the morning and before we jump (or drag if not a morning person) out of bed is…

Lord, how can I serve you today?

I must admit, as much as I agree, I usually forget to do this.

Typically, my mind goes immediately to my To Do List. I begin a mental list of what needs to be accomplished and I begin ranking that list in order of importance. Sometimes I wonder if God just grins at my little mental Type A personality list and shakes His head in amusement.

Sure, my child, you get that list of yours organized…but I have other plans.

This is why I am beginning to see the beauty of first asking the Father what He wants me to put on my list for the day. What is it that He thinks is important? I wonder how many blessings I miss out on everyday because I become too preoccupied tending to my “must get this done” list?

There are benefits to starting off each day on the same page as our Creator.

So, whose To Do List are you looking at today?

My desire is for my day to begin with a simple question.

Lord, how can I serve You today?

We humans keep brainstorming options and plans,
but God‘s purpose prevails.
(Proverbs 19:21 Message)

"Whose To Do List are you looking at today?" – I love this thought. And Proverbs 19:21 is a favorite of mine, but I've never read it from the Message before. Thank you for sharing! ~ Regina

It is funny that you write this because just this morning I was laying in bed and said, "so God, what are we going to do today?".

I laughed out loud at the line: sure my child you get that list of yours organized, but I have other plans. so funny.

    Blessings to you Eileen.

Great post Eileen! I've heard the saying, "Want to hear God laugh? Tell Him your plans." I want my to do list to reflect what God wants for me to do.

I have to admit that I don't always remember to ask God what His plans are. Too many times I'm just focused on what I need to accomplish. If I want to draw closer to God, I need to make sure I seek Him first.

Great post Eileen. I've certainly been guilty of going over the "tasks at hand" in the morning, and then asking God for guidance instead of the other way around… Great reminder!

    Have a Blessed Day!

I like this one…I've also read something where a lady was sharing how she committed each part of her body to the Lord as she got out of bed…I don't have time for that, but the 'Lord, how may I serve You today?' can encompass it all in one simple phrase!

I've been so convicted that the first thing I do is grab my Blackberry when I wake up. I act like I'm looking at the time, but I'm not really. 🙂
